Make the image as big as possible, stick your nose on the screen, and imagine yourself entering the quiet jungle nook depicted in this antique lithograph reproduction. The broad-leafed plant is Xanthosoma sagittifoilum, or arrowleaf elephant’s ear, an essential crop for the cuisine of central/south American and south-east Asian cooking which is also essential in reforesting efforts to provide early shade and support.
The original lithograph was done by Joseph Selleny, a mid-19th century Austrian landscape painter, watercolorist, draftsman, lithographer, and a hell-of-a-mustache wearer. He was quite popular amongst Austrian royalty of the time period, mostly with his Romantic watercolors, which are still prominently displayed in Museums around Vienna.
